1.       SSS Event:  Cultural Dinner at El Pollon Peruvian Kitchen (250 High Street, Morgantown) – Wednesday, October 1st, 5:30 pm – 7:30 pm

 2.       SSS Event:  Cozy Connections – Thursday, October 9th, 12 pm to 4 pm, Maple House (724 College Ave)

Start your Fall Break at a relaxing afternoon event with us!  Enjoy a day of spay treatments, movies, candle making, and crafts.  Cider and snacks will be provided.  The event will take place in the Maple House, located at 724 College Avenue (near Dadisman and Stalnaker residence halls).  Use this link to reserve your spot:  https://wvu.qualtrics.com/jfe/form/SV_72qHxjNSxt4zUfY

 3.       Mountaineer Friday: - Friday, September 26th, 2025, 11 am – 3 pm, Front of the Mountainlair

Come to the front of the Mountainlair for Mountaineer Friday!  The Mountaineer Maniacs will be there handing out free buttons.  There will also be sports team posters available, free snacks, and music.  Food trucks will be on location for students to purchase items.  The WVU Bookstore will have a pop-up shop where you can stop and shop, too.  The event takes place from 11 am to 3 pm.

 4.       Pre-Health Student Mixer: Monday, October 6th, 1 pm – 6 pm, Shenandoah Room in the Mountainlair

Interested in pursuing a career in healthcare?  Looking to connect with peers, mentors or future professionals in medicine, dentistry, nursing, public health and more?  Join the Pre-Health Student Mixer on October 6 from 1 pm – 6 pm in the Shenandoah Room of the Mountainlair.  The event is a “drop-in” so you can stop by between classes to grab a snack and enter to win test prep bundles, Anki remotes, and more!  This is a great opportunity to: meet fellow pre-health students from all over campus; network with upperclassmen and advisors; learn about resources, clubs, and opportunities on campus; enjoy free food and good conversations; win raffle prizes!  Be sure to check out the Pre-Health Professional Development Office site for more information about the services they provide and other upcoming events at:  https://prehealth.wvu.edu/

 5.       2025 RUSH (Rural Undergraduate Shadowing in Healthcare) Applications due by October 8th

The 2025 Rural Undergraduate Shadowing in Healthcare (RUSH) program application is now open. Please submit full applications by October 8, 2025.  Are you an undergraduate student interested in a healthcare career serving in a rural community? Thinking about medical, dental, or nursing school? The WVU Institute for Community and Rural Health RUSH program is a great introduction to practicing in rural communities. Selections will be made by the end of October 2025.

 Shadow a rural practitioner (family medicine, dentistry, nursing, physician assistant, or physical therapy) for a total of 20 hours during specific dates agreed upon by the participating practitioner and the student and complete the Rural PRO (Professionalism Readiness Opportunity) program. Students will receive a participation award of $300 after completion.  6.       Study Abroad Presentation by Gilman Scholarship recipient and SSS Participant, Alex Nichols – Thursday, October 2nd, 4 pm – 5 pm, 106 Oglebay Hall

Are you a Pell Grant recipient and interested in a future study abroad trip? Join us on October 2nd from 4pm to 5pm in room 106 of Oglebay Hall as SSS/TRIO Peer Mentor Alex Nichols speaks about his summer in the United Kingdom and how to apply for the Gilman Scholarship, a US Department of State program that can provide up to $5000 in funding for studying abroad. International scholarship is life-changing but can be expensive, so come learn about this valuable financial resource from a Gilman Scholarship winner!

 7.       Gilman International Scholarship Deadline October 9, 2025

The Gilman International Scholarship Program provides students grant funding for study abroad. The goal of the Gilman Program is to prepare students for a role in the changing global economy. Scholarships are awarded as funds up to $5,000; additional funds for Critical Language Study are available up to $3,000. Financial need is a consideration for applications.

 8.       2026-2027 FAFSA Form is Now Available

The 2026–27 Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA®) form is now available to everyone. You can complete the form to apply for financial aid for attendance at college or career school between July 1, 2026, and June 30, 2027.  To access the FAFSA, go to:  https://studentaid.gov/h/apply-for-aid/fafsa.  If you’d like assistance in completing your FAFSA or have questions about the FAFSA site, come to our upcoming Lunch and Learn: FAFSA and Financial Aid Renewal program on Wednesday, October 15th from 11:30 am to 1:30 pm, in the Monongahela Room on the 2nd floor of the Mountainlair.  We’ll have a financial aid professional on site at that meeting to answer questions and to provide assistance.  You can reserve your spot at that event here:  https://wvu.qualtrics.com/jfe/form/SV_eVQfHCwI99GYNVk

 9.       Drop-In Tutoring Now Available in the SSS Office – Mondays 1 pm to 5 pm and Tuesdays/Thursdays 2 pm to 6 pm

Get help now!  The SSS office is now offering FREE drop-in tutoring for a variety of subjects in the SSS office (G-30 Mountainlair) on Mondays from 1 pm to 5 pm and again on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 2 pm to 6 pm.  Subjects tutored include the following:

 10.   FALL ISP (Individual Success Plan) meetings

We are scheduling ISP appointments now.  Appointments will take place in person in the SSS office.  Please allow at least 1 hour for your meeting, you will go over some important information with your counselor.  Stop in the office to schedule or call the SSS office at 304-293-6629.  For those students enrolled in our SSS Service Learning classes, you must schedule your ISP appointment by September 30th to receive points for the class. 

 11.   SSS Tutor Requests

The SSS office will be offering one-on-one tutoring this fall with in-person and virtual options.  You will not be able to request a tutor until you complete your ISP appointment with your counselor.  Call the office at 304-293-6629 or stop by to schedule your ISP appointment.  Make sure you let us know that you need to request a tutor at that time so we can get you in to see your counselor as quickly as possible.

 12.   School Supplies Available in the SSS Office

School supplies (folders, notebooks, pens/pencils, index cards, etc.) will be available in the SSS/TRIO Office (G-30 Mountainlair) if you need them.  For those who are taking chemistry, we have plenty of goggles and aprons that you can borrow for your lab courses.  In addition, we will have snacks, water, and coffee available throughout the academic year.

 14.   Additional FREE Academic Support

WVU tutoring centers are offering both in-person and online tutoring options for Fall 2025.  For details about each tutoring center and instructions about how to receive support, go to:  https://tutoring.wvu.edu/.

 The Office of Student Success also offers assistance from Student Success Coaches.  These coaches will help you stay on track academically.  For more information about success coaching, go to https://studentsuccess.wvu.edu/services/student-success-coaching

 StudentLingo is an online platform that offers 20-minute, on-demand workshops focusing on a variety of skills needed to achieve at the college level.  You can choose from 50 different topics, and each workshop comes with an action plan that you can download to help put these new skills to work.  To access StudentLingo, go to https://studentlingo.com/wvu and use your WVU username and password to log in. 

                     The Student Support Services/TRIO (SSS) program supports WVU and Undergraduate Education as a student-centered environment by providing individualized services to students who are either first-generation, income eligible, or have a learning or physical disability. Based on their needs and goals, SSS assists them with academic accomplishments and social and cultural enrichment so they may successfully complete baccalaureate degrees.
