1.       Sign Up for the Final Two SSS/TRIO Events for Spring 2025

The end of the semester is quickly approaching, so don’t forget to sign up for our final two events of the semester.  

The Wow Factory Paint and Sip:  Tuesday, April 15th, 5 pm – 7 pm, Side Pocket (Group meeting space next to billiards room in the Mountainlair Games Area)

Explore your creative side with us with a guided canvas painting.  The Wow Factory will bring materials to the Mountainlair - all expenses will be covered by the SSS office.  Snacks and drinks will be provided.  Seating is limited – sign up required.  Use this link to sign up:  https://wvu.qualtrics.com/jfe/form/SV_9spG2gqJT1umxzE

 Graduation & Recognition Program:  Thursday, May 1st, 5 pm – 7:30 pm, Gold Ballroom - Mountainlair 2nd Floor

 2.       Share Your Feedback:  Complete the Student Evaluation of Advising Survey

Beginning today, undergraduate students will receive a short survey about their academic advising experience.  The survey is anonymous and helps to gauge student satisfaction, improve the advising experience, and shape professional development opportunities for advisers so they can continue to provide quality academic advising support to students.  The Student Evaluation of Advising Survey will be sent to your MIX email and is available through April 4th.  For questions about the survey, please email advisinghelp@mail.wvu.edu

 3.       New Student Organization Launching:  Student United Way

United Way is launching Student United Way at WVU, a student-led organization focused on service, advocacy, and community impact.  Student United Way is a dynamic organization that empowers students to create positive change through volunteerism, leadership, and professional networking opportunities.

 4.       FREE Spring GRE Workshop Series – Starts 4/3

Educational Testing Consultants, Inc. (ETC) specializes in providing test preparation services in partnership with colleges and universities.  They offer their partner institutions the opportunity to tailor test preparation classes to the specific needs of the communities they serve at an affordable price with the assurance of quality.  ETC is proud to support Federal TRIO programs from around the country.  This spring they are offering a GRE Workshop Series.  This series of four live-online workshops offered in April allows students to prepare for the GRE at no cost.

•     GRE Math Strategies (4/10)

•     GRE Verbal Strategies (4/17)

•     GRE Intro and Practice Test Review (4/24)

 Workshops are held on Thursday evenings in April from 7:00 PM - 8:00 PM ET.  Students can register at this link:  https://onlinetestingconsultants.com/events/gre-2025-spring-workshop-series/.  They will continue to accept registrations through April as long as slots remain available.  Register now!

 5.       Summer Job Opportunity with Salem University Upward Bound

The Salem University Upward Bound program is seeking sophomore, junior, and senior students in education, social work, psychology, or related majors for fun, challenging, and rewarding summer employment.  These Summer Residential Assistants would work June 9, 2025 through July 25, 2025. 

 RESPONSIBILITIES include:

  • living in residence halls and supervising high school students
  • organizing and implementing activities
  • enforcing rules and regulations
  • assisting students with academic and personal growth in preparation for college
  • professional role-modeling

 QUALIFICATIONS include:

  • completion of at least freshman/sophomore year of college
  • leadership skills and ability to be a positive role model
  • ability to work as a team player and independently
  • good verbal communication skills
  • ability to demonstrate initiative
  • academic success in college (~2.5 GPA)
  • willingness to work full-time with no other commitments from Sundays at 7 PM to Fridays at 5 PM
  • ability to relate to (or previous experience working with) teens from lower-income, rural environments

 BENEFITS include:

 6.       SSS/TRIO Drop-in Tutoring Schedule

 7.       Spring ISP (Individual Success Plan) meetings

Now is the time to schedule your required ISP meetings.  Appointments will take place in-person in the SSS office (or virtually if needed).  Please allow at least 1 hour for your meeting, you will go over some important information with your counselor.  Stop in to schedule or call the SSS office at 304-293-6629. 

 8.       SSS Tutor Requests

The SSS office will once again be offering one-on-one tutoring this semester.  You will not be able to request a tutor until you complete your ISP appointment with your counselor.  Call the office at 293-6629 or stop by to schedule your ISP appointment.  Make sure you let us know that you need to request a tutor at that time so we can get you in to see your counselor as quickly as possible.

 9.       School Supplies Available in the SSS Office

School supplies (folders, notebooks, pens/pencils, index cards, etc.) will be available in the SSS/TRIO Office (G-30 Mountainlair) if you need them.  For those who are taking chemistry, we have plenty of goggles and aprons that you can borrow for your lab courses.  In addition, we will have snacks, coffee, and other drinks available throughout the academic year.

 10.   Important Dates

April 18 – Spring Holiday (University Closed)

April 21 – Last Day to Withdraw from an individual course for full term / Last Day to Withdraw from University

May 2 – Last day of Classes

May 5 - May 9 – Final Exams

May 12 – Final Grades due by noon

 11.   Additional FREE Academic Support

WVU tutoring centers are offering both in-person and online tutoring options for Spring 2025.  For details about each tutoring center and instructions about how to receive support, go to:  https://tutoring.wvu.edu/.

 The REACH Student Success office also offers assistance from Student Success Coaches.  These coaches will help you stay on track academically.  For more information about success coaching, go to https://studentsuccess.wvu.edu/reach-for-success/success-coaching

 StudentLingo is an online platform that offers 20 minute, on-demand workshops focusing on a variety of skills needed to achieve at the college level.  You can choose from 50 different topics and each workshop comes with an action plan that you can download to help put these new skills to work.  To access StudentLingo, go to https://studentlingo.com/wvu and use your WVU username and password to log in. 

                  The Student Support Services/TRIO (SSS) program supports WVU and Undergraduate Education as a student-centered environment by providing individualized services to students who are either first-generation, income eligible, or have a learning or physical disability. Based on their needs and goals, SSS assists them with academic accomplishments and social and cultural enrichment so they may successfully complete baccalaureate degrees.
